FAQ

How do I know if my bite is infected or just having a normal reaction?

Most simple or normal reactions go away on their own or resolve in a day. If a bite or sting is still red, painful, or swollen after 24 to 48 hours, there is a good chance it may be infected. Our pharmacist can assess the bite to see if it is just an inflammatory response or if an infection is present.

What happens during the pharmacy consultation?

Our pharmacist will assess the bite and will want to know if you have any insect allergy and how the symptoms have progressed, if at all. If the infection is simple, we will provide and/or prescribe treatment to assist your body in healing.

What should I do while waiting to see the pharmacist?

You should wash the bite gently with mild soap and water and keep it clean. Do not scratch the bite, as this can cause an infection. A cold compress may help to soothe the bite if it is swollen.

When should I seek emergency care instead?

Call an emergency number if you have any signs of a serious allergic reaction. These signs include: difficulty in breathing, swelling in the face or throat, lightheadedness or fainting, and having a widespread rash. If you have a high fever or feel sick, see a doctor right away.

Is there an age limit for this service?

We can provide professional advice and treatment for children from the age of 1 year and older. If the bite involves a very young baby, it is more appropriate to ask your GP or a health visitor for the most suitable advice.

Don’t Ignore the Signs of Infection

It can also help prevent an infection that could develop. Our pharmacy team is available to help you in a convenient, friendly, clinical setting.
